‘Are we out of business?’ Abbasi asked when they were driving back.

‘We have other buyers. Russians, European gangs.’

‘None of them will pay top dollar like your general. Besides, we don’t have a trusted relationship with them. They could stab us in the back.’

‘I meant what I said. The investigation will collapse soon.’

‘How?’

Poole smiled coldly. ‘When you kill two more men. Afghans. We’ll plant evidence that will link them to Rasoul and to the product.’

‘He was my friend. His character—’

‘He was ours, too. Look at it practically, however. He’s no longer with us. We need to feed the investigation with just enough information so that the JTF is satisfied. What would Rasoul say if he was with us?’

Abbasi stared out of the window as Gonzalez drove and then nodded.

‘Hameed and I will get two Afghan bodies. But that still leaves Grogan.’

‘I have something planned for him.’

‘You said that before. He’s still out there.’

‘He can’t escape this one.’

‘Why can’t we ignore him and go about our business?’

‘You heard the general,’ Poole said bleakly. ‘He’s right. Cutter Grogan won’t stop even if the JTF folds up. He’s our biggest threat.’
